We often say things like “I need to slow down”, “I feel stuck”, or “I need some space”. These thoughts usually come from a deeper emotional need.
The five elements, earth, water, fire, air, and space, offer a simple way to understand these shifts. Each one reflects something we seek, whether it’s stability, movement, clarity, or rest.
At Nandi Housing, we believe the right design supports these needs. Our ongoing project, Nandi Meraki, features courtyards shaped around each element, creating spaces that intuitively respond and help residents live with greater awareness.
Earth: helps you to feel grounded
Earth is about feeling steady and supported.
It shows up when things feel a bit too much, and there’s a need to slow down or come back to something familiar.
This can look like small things:
choosing a proper meal
tidying up your space
staying in instead of stepping out
At Nandi Meraki, the EARTH COURTYARD offers a place to pause and feel settled. With features like a reflexology walkway, aroma garden, sandbed path and tactile spaces, this courtyard makes you feel grounded.
Water: helps you to feel and adapt
Sometimes, feelings linger without a way to move, and things begin to feel a little heavy.
Water is about emotions and movement. It has a way of gently inviting you to let go.
It can look like
Pausing instead of pushing through
Listening to something that helps you feel
At Nandi Meraki, the WATER COURTYARD features the water fountain court, immersive pavilion, and lotus bowls, bringing a sense of flow into everyday life. With water, gentle sounds, and quiet reflections, it becomes a space where emotions can soften on their own.
Fire: helps you with purpose and direction
Fire is about energy and direction.
Its absence makes your day feel dull or meaningless.
Bringing in fire can be as simple as,
Starting a new project
setting a goal
doing something that keeps you energised
At Nandi Meraki, the FIRE COURTYARD brings this energy through light, warmth, and activity. With spaces like the sundial court, surya kunda, and sun frames, it creates an environment that naturally feels more active and alive.
Air: helps you feel light and free
Air represents the need to feel light, free, and mentally clear.
It shows up when things feel crowded or heavy, and there’s a need to step away, even for a bit.
This can look like
stepping outside
changing your surroundings
writing things down to clear your head
At Nandi Meraki, the AIR COURTYARD makes this easy. Open, light-filled spaces with features like a swing court, play area, skating rink, and wind chime court create a place to step out and feel a little lighter.
Space: helps you slow down and be
Space is quiet, often felt more than seen.
It helps us to pause and slow down.
This can look like
doing nothing
sitting in silence
allowing yourself to just be
The concept of panchamahabhutas at Nandi Meraki is something you get to experience through touch, sight, smell, and sound. These elements become part of everyday life, helping residents build a closer connection with nature within their own community.
