Being environmentally sustainable is not a single endeavour. It involves a holistic approach to working, building and everyday life as all being part of the commitment to a more environmentally conscious world. Nandi Housing strives to create communities and apartments that are active participants in this environmentally conscious world, and this gives us a unique space and responsibility within the real estate industry. Sustainability drives how we build, how we make space for our living communities and how we engage with our office spaces and employee relations. construction Construction: How we make our building process and our apartment spaces more green
“For a long time, our construction sites have been zero waste – all the waste generated from our site is used within the site itself. We have close relationships with completed apartment communities in the neighbourhood and use their recycled water for construction to the maximum extent possible. In general, we consume as little as we can, keeping waste to a minimum. – we’ve always believe that this is important not only from an economic point of view but also from an environmental point of view,” remarks our Executive Director, Thommen Ollapally. These are some green practices that we follow:
  • Even if it means not using all of our built-up areas, we believe in the importance of ensuring that there is plenty of space for trees, for green spaces and for our residents to take pleasure in the outdoors. Our emphasis is placed equally on both construction quality and overall quality of life. We aspire to leave the lowest possible environmental imprint while generating the greatest possible benefit.
  • To promote a healthy ecology and community life that is energy-efficient, we carefully arrange our landscaping and other design features.
  • We go to considerable lengths to accommodate any on-site trees when designing a project. To significantly reduce the amount of wood used, we have also reduced the use of plywood sheets and silver wood runners.
  • Air quality reports are generated every month to protect the quality of living for Nandi Citadel, the latest project of Nandi Housing.
  • The staff is provided with electrical scooters to encourage eco-friendly commute practices for work.
wetlands Meanwhile, at the office Milin George, our HR Manager, talked to us about the sustainability initiatives that form part of the working life of Nandi Housing employees. “Some measures we follow to reduce our carbon footprint in the BTM office are listed below. They were implemented as Thommen is passionate about being eco-friendly and the team adapted to the new ways as we saw value in it.”
  • Minimal use of AC
  • Lights and fans are switched off after use
  • 95% of the internal lighting is LED
  • All systems are shut down at the end of the day
  • All of us use our own glass/steel water bottles
  • The guests are also served water/juice in glasses
  • For events and lunches we only use biodegradable plates and glasses
  • We do not use disposable plastic spoons
  • The staff is mindful of waste segregation
  • Any leaks in taps, faucets, etc. are addressed immediately
  • Water controller in the tank has been installed to prevent overflow
The key environmental intervention in our future project will be the ‘culture of minimalism,’ renewing the consumption of energy. Our ultimate goal is to hit net-zero, but we’re working from the ground up, taking time to ensure that our residents also benefit from reduced maintenance costs. Thus, Nandi Housing has, over the last four decades, consciously brought a massive change in sustainability/green initiatives in the real estate industry of Bangalore. We take environmentally conscious design very seriously. And to be recognized by the Government; Karnataka State Pollution Control Board as one of the Green Buildings* among residential apartments in Bengaluru City for the conservation of the environment has been our great honour.

*Green Building includes efficient use of energy, water, and other resources, renewable energy such as solar, pollution, and water reduction measures, good indoor air quality, and enabling of re-use and recycling of materials, use of materials that are non-toxic, ethical, sustainable, eco-friendly design, construction, and operation. Green building provides one of the most cost-effective solutions to climate change and can lead to significant environmental, economical, and social benefits – as defined by Environmental Management and Policy Research Institute (EMPRI).
